Chocolate Buttermilk Sheet Cake

Grandma Sue is famous for her chocolate buttermilk sheet cake.  It has long been the only cake that will do for any birthday around here.  Jonathan and Jackson's friends expectantly look forward to this cake, as well.  :)

Here is the recipe...

Grandma's Famous Chocolate Buttermilk Sheet Cake

2 cups sugar
2 cups flour
1 tsp. baking soda
Sift above ingredients into a bowl.

2 sticks butter
4 Tbsp. baking cocoa
1 cup water
Melt these 3 ingredients together in a saucepan.  Then bring to a rapid boil and pour over dry ingredients.

Add...
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 eggs, beaten
1 tsp vanilla extract

Mix gently, then pour batter into greased and floured jelly roll pan (We use the Pampered Chef stoneware bar pan).  Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes.

Icing Recipe
Start this when the cake goes into the oven.  You can use the same saucepan.

Melt...
1 stick butter
4 Tbsp. baking cocoa
6 Tbsp. buttermilk
Bring to a boil.

Add...
4 cups powdered sugar
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Spread over warm cake.

  1. Do you grease and flour your PC stoneware pan? I have one of those as well and just wondered.

  2. We don't do anything to our stoneware pans, but they are pretty well seasoned, so that may make a difference.
